taxiclub1The management of long-standing Darlinghurst drag haven The Taxi Club says the club’s dire financial strife means it must close its doors on April 8 – Easter Sunday.

“Despite our best efforts, our financial situation has deteriorated to the point where we have no option other than to shortly cease trading,” confirmed the club’s Broad of Directors in a letter to its members today.

“This is an enormously disheartening situation… without doubt many members and parts of the community will be extremely disappointed, as are the members of the board and our truly faithful staff.”

The directors blame a decline in gaming revenues and mismanagement of its property assets among the reasons for its downturn.

The Taxi Club, located on Flinders Street close to Taylor Square, will continue to operate as usual until April 8, with nightly themes and activities. Its Board says funds raised until the club’s closure may be enough to rehouse it at a later date – and special parties will soon be announced to farewell Taxi as we know it.

“Your attendance at the club, and that of your friends, could make all the difference. We hope of course that we will be able to reopen at a future date so that we can once again serve the social needs of the GLBTI community.”
