Heated debate this morning amolabormarchngst delegates at Labor’s Annual Conference saw them decide on a conscience vote for marriage equality, meaning thousands of colourful marchers in Sydney this afternoon had a little to be happy about, but a lot to still hope for.

Early reports suggested there were 10,000 people involved in the march, but later estimates put it at around 6,000. Either way, this was Australia’s largest marriage equality march yet.

Shouting their slogans and waving rainbow-coloured signs, the throng weaved its way from Hyde Park to Darling Harbour, stopping traffic and earning applause and smiles from passers-by.

kardashianweddingThe dramas just keep on rolling with Kim Kardashian’s broken marriage. Hey it wouldn’t be quality reality television if it went any other way…

Homophobia has now been dragged into the saga, and the culprit is desperate to stop certain scenes from screening.

In a report with Life & Style Kris Humphries is concerned about footage of him bullying Kim’s best friend Jonathan Cheban.

gaggedPolitical leaders in one of Russia’s biggest cities will this week vote on a bill designed to silence mention of homosexuality in schools, but which could also be used to end pride parades and pro-equality political actions.

The Bill, which is prompting outrage from global groups across the world, calls for harsh financial penalties for “public actions aimed at propaganda of pederasty, lesbianism, bisexuality, and transgenderism among minors” in the city of St. Petersburg.

gillardWhatever side of the debate you’re on and whichever political party you support, it seems no-one’s happy about Julia Gillard’s gay marriage conscience vote proposal.

Despite national support for marriage equality law reform rising to 62% (and 71% of Labor voters), the Prime Minister confirmed yesterday she’s still opposed to same-sex marriage, but is calling for a conscience vote on the matter – which, since the opposition will vote ‘no’ as a block, will doom a gay marriage breakthrough in the near future.

Her announcement has prompted a outburst of commentary…

rickymartinRicky Martin was given Spanish citizenship last Friday and the super-popular singer, who came out in 2009, reportedly wants to take advantage of Spain’s gay marriage laws.

Martin’s publicist Jose Blanco told a news conference that ministers had agreed to grant him a ‘Letter of Naturalisation’, issued in special circumstances, because of his “personal and professional links with Spain”.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that Martin sought citizenship in order to marry his long-term boyfriend Carlos Gonzalez Abella, with whom he is bringing up his twin three-year-old sons.

adelaide1Adelaide’s recent Pride Parade was tainted somewhere, with a group of around a dozen placard-carrying religious protestors, spewing homophobia from their megaphones.

Saturday's "The Feast Festival" parade crew valiantly tried to avoid confrontations between the event’s rainbow warriors and the ‘church’ crew, but while much verbal abuse was traded, the event passed without violence.

Plus there’ll be fun for al the family with a rainbow-coloured picnic in Civic Park on November 27.

“The Top End seems to go un-noticed on the GLTBQ radar, but we’re hoping this is about to change,” Brenton Niemz of Darwin Pride tells Same Same. “We even have a couple of the local churches on board, which is brilliant to see.

“That is what I love about Darwin – It’s a melting pot of all walks of life, which exist harmoniously together in an amazing tropical city.”

Other events on the calendar include the ‘Love Boat’ Sunset Harbour Cruise on Saturday 19th and the Queens of the Galaxy competition and after party on Saturday 26th, MC’ed by Pandora Boxx.

kellyosbourneKelly Osbourne, who is now the spokesperson for Madonna and Lourde’s Material Girl line, has come out and spoken about her former fiance Luke Worrall and the woman who came between their engagement – transgender model Elle Schneider.

During an interview with UK Glamour, the words the former reality show star used were anything but glamourous:

“Having to tell my parents my ex-fiancé Luke had cheated on me with a tranny was so humiliating,” the former reality TV show star ranted. “Everyone kept telling me that Luke was cheating on me, but I never believed them.

“It’s hard enough to get your head around someone cheating on you… but when when someone is a chick with a dick? I’d always thought the worst way to get cheated on would be with an ugly girl.”

Okay, we can understand that the poor girl must have been pretty hurt, but shouting out to the world in a somewhat transphobic manner isn’t going to help your cause. One must wonder how using the prahse “chicks with dicks” is suitable for someone who claims to be an alleged friend of the LGBT community and was the grand marshal at the 2010 West Hollywood Pride Parade.

Golden Girl Betty White has proven once again, that she’s definitely still got it, rapping with the techno dance diva Luciana in a new track and music video.

As we’ve come to expect with sassy British singer Luciana, the song is amazing, and Betty’s input on it is hilarious.

“I’m smokin’, I’m in a whirl, I’m still a Golden Girl,” Betty-from-the-Block raps. “I may be a senior – so what? I’m still hot!”

In the video, you’ll see breakdancing, plenty of shirtless muscle boys, some delicious cheesecakes and even a snake. And it’s all for a good cause – all proceeds go towards the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association.

“He’s incredibly beautiful,” Jadranka Pejic says of her son’s modeling shoots and catwalk appearances in women’s high-fashion couture.

The proud mum keeps a scrapbook of clippings from Andrej’s jet-setting career. “He is always flying between Europe and new York, and often does 10 castings in a day, plus interviews and late-night parties. He’s exhausted,” she fretted to Woman’s Day.

Better FlirtingAre you a good flirt? Or are you terrible at ‘taking things to the next level’?

Below, Shannon has a few tips for getting the attention of someone you desire…
The dating scene can be a daunting experience for anybody, especially if you have just come out or are getting back on the horse again after a breakup.

Firstly the thing to remember is that most people – no matter how experienced or confident they may appear – are just as afraid of rejection as you are.

The key with flirting is to be subtle. If you come on too strong you may frighten them off. Flirting is as much about the chase as it is about the sweaty sticky result.

Too Gay?In a world where masculinity is fetishised, what happens if you’re naturally a bit camp?

I was at the Imperial and I don’t know if this happens to anyone else, but I was in that state of drunk where I turn into J’amie from Summer Heights High.

I pull someone aside and repeatedly ask, “Am I hot? Am I attractive?” It’s disgusting. A mate of mine was unfortunate enough to be subjected to this that night. What was even more unfortunate was his response: “You’re attractive, but I’d never sleep with you because you’re too gay.” Oh, girl.

After last year’s infamous ‘meat dress’ at last year’s Video Music Awards, we weren’t sure what food group Mother Monster would be wearing this time around.

No, this year Lady GaGa has appeared as her male alter-ego Jo Calderone.

‘He’ introduced himself as Joe, GaGa’s ex, smoking and telling the crowd how weird GaGa was and how she’d dumped him.

Short black hair with sideburns, a white-t-shirt and dark trousers complete her look – but we’re surprised there wasn’t a little hint of fake stubble too.

Who says politics can’t be sexy? Californian Jamie Stroud uses his YouTube channel and videos to fight for gender equality and make a bold stand against unfair censorship on the online broadcaster, with powerful and sexy results.

It all began after videos of Stroud dancing in his underwear or with no shirt on were removed from YouTube for apparently violating their terms of use – creating material someone told the site was ‘inappropriate’.

Stroud quickly found out that similar videos featuring girls were freely available and allowed, despite blatantly violating the terms of the site.

“Whenever I uploaded a video of me dancing on YouTube, it’s always gotten removed. But if you go online to YouTube and search ‘My sister making me hot to rape her’ you’ll get tones of videos of girls dancing”, Says the sexy underwear clad Stroud at the start of his first ‘Dancing Boys’ video.

“Reece and I don’t think that’s very fair, so now, we are going to dance for gender equality.”

Stroud and his mate Reece then go on to recreate a video that already features on YouTube featuring two almost naked girls girating sexually to the Pussycat Dolls hit, Don’t Cha. The actual video is shown in the top right corner.

Intelligent, political, funny and sexy, their message is loud and clear about the still evident homophobia, sexism and bigotry that exists on significant platforms such as YouTube and Facebook whose terms and conditions seem to be implemented with overt bias. At the end of the video, he invites those watching to join him in his stand by commenting, liking or making their own video.

A brand new campaign for equal rights has ignited in New Zealand, urging the centre-right government to act on marriage equality and same-sex couples’ adoption rights.

“There are still many inequalities facing non-heterosexual people in New Zealand today,” say the team behind the Legalise Love campaign. “At present non-heterosexual couples cannot have their love recognised in the same way as heterosexuals, implying that our love is different.

“Nor can they adopt a child as a family – only one half of any non-heterosexual couple can be legally recognised as the child’s parent.

“Legalise Love aims to create greater awareness of the legislative inequalities facing non-heterosexual New Zealanders.”

An online campaign began this week with a website including an online petition. As momentum builds through social media, the campaign’s crew hope to attract a large crowd to a “peaceful march” on parliament in Wellington in October.

Roberto Arango of the Puerto Rican Senate has stepped down from his position after images surfaced of the Senator on the “all male” location-based mobile application Grindr.

When questioned by local media, Arango neither denied or admitted the photos in question are of himself, only stating “You know I’ve been losing weight. As I shed that weight, I’ve been taking pictures. I don’t remember taking this particular picture but I’m not gonna say I didn’t take it. I’d tell you if I remembered taking the picture but I don’t.”

The photos in question show a man covering his face with an iPhone while standing semi-naked in front of a mirror (another headless torso to add to the rest!). Another photo from the same Grindr account shows a man bending over exposing his rear.

cairnsCairns Regional Council plans to launch a same-sex couple register.

Reports suggest the register would offer an alternative to marriage for gay, lesbian and transgender couples.

According to the Cairns Post, an alliance of local support groups is working with the council on the register as a way of providing official recognition of same-sex relationships.

Proponents say it would provide a sense of wellbeing for same-sex couples and provide a legal mechanism to make it easier for them to prove their relationship. Similar relationship registers already exist in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania on both a state and local government level. Queensland does not have a statewide register.

Cairns Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Alliance spokesman Nick Thompson, who is standing for a council seat, said the register would be the “next best thing” to marriage.

“We’re pleased that the council is now developing a policy about how the register might work, including a consultation period where the public can have a say,” he said.

A brand new street-wide promotion is set to ignite a huge evening for Oxford Street and raise money for the Mardi Gras Parade.

From 5pm on Friday 30 September – kicking off the long weekend – punters will be invited to take an early exit from work, grab a group of friends, support the local shops and restaurants and reclaim our city’s ‘gay golden mile’.

“When was the last time you had a tasty cocktail at the Columbian, saw a great drag show at the Midnight Shift, flirted with a cute boy at Stonewall or a sexy girl at Bitch Boutique @ Ruby Rabbit (a chic new bar at 231 Oxford Street), danced your socks off at Nevermind, experienced superclub Arq or chilled with a nice cold one at the Oxford? Well now you can do them all on Big Gay Friday,” say the special one-off event’s crew.

A $10 wristband gets you into all the venues mentioned above – and $5 of it goes directly to New Mardi Gras.

The participating venues are laying on early shows, entertainment and drink specials to make it a very Big Gay Friday indeed.

So get to Oxford Street early, come for your after work drinks, and make it an evening, and night, to remember.

joan collinsGlamour girl Joan Collins is set to tell all about the highs and lows of her long showbiz career – and her five marriages – in a special A Night with Joan tour of Australia.

The Dynasty actress will share amazing anecdotes of a life spent in the spotlight at dates in Sydney, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Perth this November. Tickets will go on sale next week.

“I have had a lot of fans telling me, ‘Please come to Australia’,” the star herself explains. “So I thought, because I’m a sun worshipper, it would be fun.”

With a career spanning more than 50 years as an actress, producer, author, humanitarian and entrepreneur, the 78-year-old is a true icon of stage and screen.

Her role in the television series Dynasty made her and her character Alexis Carrington-Colby a household name, but she’s also well aware of her gay icon status.

“I think that gay guys – and I have many, many gay friends – like the clothes, the attitude, the ballsiness,” she told Canada’s gay news Xtra of her Dynasty character. “Alexis had a man’s attitude. She took no prisoners in terms of sex. If she had to use her sexual wiles to get a business deal she did that, too. She was tough in business, but looked good in a negligee.”

Right-wing senators Barnaby Joyce and Bob Katter joined a visiting conservative commentator as fear-mongers with bizarre rhetoric at today’s Marriage Day rally to block same-sex nuptials.

Conducted in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra this morning, the Don’t Meddle With Marriage Rally was backed by several ‘traditional values’ and religious groups, including The Australian Christian Lobby, the National Marriage Coalition, The Australian Family Association and the Dads 4 Kids Fatherhood Foundation.

ABC journo Latika Bourke (@latikambourke) was there, and tweeted the photo of the rally shown at right. The event’s MC Peter Phillips opened the rally, telling the 500-or-so attendees that Australia’s campaign for gay marriage is “wrongheaded,” and driven by an “aggressive secularist movement,” according to Bourke’s tweets.

A new book titled Find Love in a Gay Bathhouse is making waves and getting gay male hopes up across the world.

The how-to guide, which is now available printed or as a digital download, includes tips on sauna etiquette, sexual safety, boundaries, having a positive mental attitude, and also provides insights into a range of other hooking up scenarios.

“When I tell people I met my Mr. Right in the steamroom of a 24-hour gay sauna, I get a variety of reactions,” says the book’s author Marcel Wiel (pictured), who lives in London.

“Straight friends and my gay ones, who have no direct experience of gay saunas, are often genuinely surprised that love can be found in a place that’s so geared to casual sex.

“The fact is, sometimes it’s easier to get past the bullshit when you’ve both got no clothes on,” adds the writer bluntly. “And it’s in this special, intimate space, that a real connection with another human being can be made.

“This is the energy that makes our souls sing, this is where love can be born, and it has nothing to do with location.”

Reviewers are raving about the book’s wry humour, candid observations and helpful suggestions.

While the book explores sexual adventures in new settings, Wiel is quick to point out the safety risks and give healthy advice. “Don’t skip the chapter in my book on STIs, HIV and condoms,” he told gay website Fridae.

“A gay sauna or bathhouse, where you will be having sex with people who are themselves having lots of sex with other people, is the perfect environment to catch and pass on an STI. But you don’t have to. Get informed, not infected.”
